GyeongNam

Gyeongsang-do denotes Gyeongsangnam-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do. Nam represents South and Buk represents North. The name ‘Gyeongsang’ was given during the Goryeo period. It was formed by first two letters of Gyeongju and Sangju, two major counties at the time.

Located at the southeastern end of the Korean Peninsula, Gyeongsangnam-do borders on Busan and Ulsan on the east, Dalseong in Daegu and Cheongdo, Goryeong, Seongju, and Gimcheon in Gyeongsangbuk-do on the north. And on the west, it borders on Muju, Jangsu and Namwon in Jeollabuk-do on one side of the Sobaeksanmaek Mountain Range and Gurye and Gwangyang in Jeollanam-do on the other side of the Sobaeksanmaek Mountain Range.

In Gyeongsangnam-do, there are more than 30 festivals or events related with Admiral Yi Sun-Sin(1545∼1598) host by each region. From 2007, Gyeonsangnam-do promotes those activities to commemorate Adimiral Yi Sun-Sin and spread his leadership and great works for the country.

Hansando and Jinju Castle, the two sites among three great battles during Imjin Waeran, are located in Gyeongsang-do, and the battle of Noryang, the last major battle, took place in Gyeongsang-do. Geobukseon (Turtle ship) was first used at Sacheonpo in Gyeongnam.

① Hansando
Hansando is an island that the Joseon naval forces during Imjin Waeran was firstly located its fortress, and the sea area is the historic place where one of the great battles took a place. Its people commemorate the spirit of Admiral Yi Sun-sin naming all the places in Hansando something related with him. It is also well known as the site where Admiral Yi Sun-sin composed a patriotic sijo(a Korean verse). The scenic beauty of Hansanman(the Gulf of Hansan) attracts many tourists every year.

② Noryang
Noryang is the last battle field during Imjin Waeran, and also the place where Admiral Yi Sun-sin met his death. There is Chungnyeolsa Temple where his body was kept for a while, and you can see the revived Geobukseon(Turtle ship) on the sea. Noryang can be easily reached by taking off the bus to Namhae(the Southern Sea) at the Namhae Daegyo(Namhae bridge).
